John Lennon Memorial Events In NY

New Yorkers Remember John Lennon: Events And Recollections

30 years ago today, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his Upper West Side apartment. It was a chilling moment for every New Yorker who had come to think of Lennon, an international superstar, as a neighbor. The Daily News writes about his love affair with the city:

"I can go out this door now, and go in a restaurant," he told the BBC. "You want to know how great that is? Or go to the movies. I mean, people come up and . . . say hi. But they don't bug you."

And the New York Times recalls his life as an Upper West Side real estate mogul:

Before he was gunned down in front of the building 30 years ago Wednesday, he was the seventh-floor resident who brought sushi to the building's October potluck. He was known as a protective father and an enterprising real estate collector, irking a few neighbors by buying up five apartments in the building.

Every year his fellow New Yorkers gather to mourn the rock legend, and this year is no exception. Strawberry Field in Central Park hosts a memorial event where fans share memories and sing their favorite Lennon songs, gathering in the morning and staying throughout the day. But on this anniversary NYC has many more such options. WNYC has a great listing of John Lennon events, like a night of tribute music at Williamsburg's Glasslands, or a gallery exhibition of photographs from Lennon's youth at The Paley Center For Media. And if you're staying in tonight, you can catch a BBC special on the man behind the music.
